Everyone pitched in to prepare a delicious meal, and we cherished the time spent around the table. Here’s to gratitude, connection, and the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones.

Every Wednesday, our fellows gather for community night. This week, our Executive Director, Jeannie Balanda, led a session focused on Día de los Muertos.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday during which families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a short reunion filled with food, drink, and celebration.

To celebrate, our fellows created an ofrenda (an altar) to honor their loved ones, showcasing photos, offerings, and mementos. Here’s to honoring memories and celebrating life! 🕯️🌼💀 #diadelosmuertos #communitynight

Meet Liza, one of our 24-25 Amate Fellows, serving as a Health Educator at Eerie Family Health Center.

The Nebraska native shares that “Nothing describes this experience quite like the sentiment of community. Whether it be listening to my patients at work, sharing stories around the dinner table, or learning about various social justice initiatives at our community nights, every aspect of Amate invites us to grow alongside one another - to find belonging and to extend that to those we serve. This year runs countercultural to the hustle I became acclimated to in college, and in doing so, it has given me the space to slow down and value the people and mundane moments around me in a new light.”

It's been a busy start to the program year, and we

It's been a busy start to the program year, and we’re excited to share what’s been happening around Amate House! 🕊🏠

In late July, we welcomed five incredible fellows for the 2024-2025 cohort program. They were warmly embraced by the St. James Parish community during their commissioning mass and quickly dove into orientation. From exploring Catholic Social Teaching and anti-racism to creating an intentional community based on respect and shared values, they’re off to a strong start.

A huge thank you to our alumni and community partners who helped make this transition smooth! Three weeks in, the fellows are settling into their roles and learning about the missions of their organizations. Recently, we held our first in-service training at Iron Oaks, featuring team-building activities and crate climbing!
